Spotlight: Femme Noire

On Saturday, October 21, burlesque dancer Ebony Jones of the dance troupe Femme Noire will perform in collaboration with musican Curtis Lovell at Squeaky Wheel’s annual Halloween-themed fundraiser, Peep Show. This year’s theme is “Scary-oke” and you can read more about it in our events setion on page ____. This week we spoke to Jones about her five-piece dance troupe Femme Noire—dancers MaDamn Noire, Vivi L’Amour Noire, Cocoa Noire, Lady Noire and Satine Noire—and what burlesque means to her as an art.

Victor Wooten

[CLASSICAL] World renowned bassist Victor Wooten will join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for a special performance on Saturday, October 21 at 8pm and Sunday, October 22 at 2pm. Wooten and the BPO will perform Wooten’s symphony piece entitled The Bass Whisperer: Concerto for Electric Bass and Orchestra.” The 53-year-old bassist, composer, and five-time Grammy Award winner debuted the piece, which was written with composer Conni Ellisor, in 2014.

The Manx

[PUNK] The Manx have something to do with Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, but this writer can’t quite figure out what, so we’ll just state “the Manx have something to do with Adult Swim,” and leave it at that. But this also means that the Manx are weird. Just how weird, you ask? They sometimes wear really boner-y spandex shorts and cover themselves in paint, and they look like they’re from some 1980s cool movie but then they also play stand-up basses and banjos.

Bad Suns

[INDIE] Rising indie rock band Bad Suns arrives from Southern Califronia for a show in Buffalo at the Town Ballroom on Monday, October 23. The four piece, who cites inspirations such as the Cure, the Clash, and Elvis Costello formed in 2012 and have since released two albums on Vagrant records. Their latest is Disappear Here, a 13-track album that straddles the line between indie rock and emo. They’ll be joined by indie rock group Hunny.

Carly Aquilino

[COMEDY] Need advice on sexting? How to pull off a successful Netflix and chill? Or like, how to house a super spicy hot wing? Then comedian Carly Aquilino will be your guide. Best known for her role on MTV’s show Girl Code, on which she talks shop on womanhood, Aquilino is also constantly on the road performing stand up. The 26-year-old comedian will bring her stand up act to Helium Comedy Club this weekend for five shows beginning this Thursday, October 19 through Saturday, October 21.

Studio: Terrance Hayes

[POETRY] The accolades come in hard and fast for the visionary poet and artist Terrance Hayes, whether it’s the National Book Award for Lighthead, or the MacArthur “genius” award, or his status as the poetry editor of the New York Times Magazine, it’s clear that the headliner for Just Buffalo’s Studio installment in its Civil Writes campaign is something of a poetry star.

The Ambulanters

[INDIE] The Ambulanters come all the way from Lincoln, Nebraska for their show this Friday, October 20 at Milkie’s on Elmwood. They’ll be joined by two great Buffalo-bands too in Passed Out and Bold Folly. The Ambulanters latest album, 2016’s Leave The House is a moody, indie rock album that moves into the realm of math-rock and post-rock at times, driven by muted guitars and emotional vocals. If you’re looking for a solid (and cheap) indie rock show this weekend, here it is.

The Front Bottoms

[ROCK] The Front Bottoms’ latest album, Going Grey, is being hailed as a creative gamble for the band. And it’s paying off. Compare the opening track, “Motorcycle” of their previous album Back on Top to Going Grey’s opening track and you’ll get it. Moving so abruptly from quirky indie rock to essentially minimal electronic pop might have alienated some of the band’s fans if not done properly, but the reviews are in and Going Grey has been well received.

The Psychedelic Furs

[ROCK] 40 years in and post-punk band the Psychedelic Furs continue to tour regularly despite not having released a studio album since 1991. That was the year the influential band, lead by brothers Richard and Tim Butler went on hiatus not to return for almost a decade. But since reforming in 2000 they’ve released a live album and four hits compilations as they continue to tour around the world.

The Spill Canvas

[EMO] It might be a miracle that the music of the Spill Canvas made it from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to your ears here in Buffalo in the early 2000s, but I guess that was the power of emo music. The band was no stranger to Buffalo during the first wave of emo, playing venues like the Icon and Showplace—their label at the time, One Eleven Records, featured a few Buffalo-based emo bands like Jinxed and This Day and Age.

A Musical Feast

Music of Schubert and Schumann, a film featuring Morton Feldman singing, and soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle’s vocalization/interpretation of text from English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge are highlights of a variegated program by A Musical Feast, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Friday, October 20, at 8pm.
