The Pixies

[ROCK] The Pixies are probably your favorite band’s favorite band. The band, formed in Boston in 1986, have released some of alternative rock’s most influential albums, specifically their 1988, Steve Albini-produced record Surfer Rosa. In fact, if it weren’t for Surfer Roas, we probably wouldn’t have “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” as Kurt Cobain once famously stated that the song was his attempt at biting The Pixies’ style. It’s also the reason Cobain ultimately decided to work with Albini on Nirvana’s 1993 album, In Utero.

Tacogate

Richard Hamilton, the owner of Deep South Taco, supports Sheriff Tim Howard. There’s nothing whatsoever wrong with that — he is free to support whomever he wants.

In fact, he has hosted fundraisers for Howard in the past, and intends to host another one in the near future. He even cuts Howard a deal, with a $1,600 in-kind contribution for food showing up in Howard’s campaign coffers.

There’s nothing whatsoever wrong with that — he is free to support whomever he wants.

Joe Bradley at the Albright-Knox

“When I was starting out, my model of how an artist’s life and career should unfold was that the artist finds his or her subject, and, you know, slowly over years and years refines the work…It took a few years in the studio for me to realize that the way I work doesn’t conform to that sort of rhythm.”

—Joe Bradley

There’s something funny about Joe Bradley’s art currently on show at the Albright-Knox. In several senses. Funny as odd, and funny as comic, and funny just as fun.

SMUG, Doc Ellis, and Yali

[ROCK] Formerly known as The Naturalists, Buffalo-based grunge band SMUG will headline a show at Nietzsche’s on Friday, September 22. The show coincides with the release of the band’s new music video “Swearing At You” (read more about it in This Week’s Public Picks). Post rock band Doc Ellis, named for everyone’s favorite acid-dosing former Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher, and chill-out jam band Yali, featuring members of Intrepid Travelers and Mutual Friends, round out the bill.

Dennis McKenna on DMT

When I read the title of this event I thought the idea was to watch Dennis McKenna—a research pharmacologist and psychedelic proponent and brother of Terence McKenna—withering around on the ground after smoking DMT. But then I realized he wouldn’t literally be ON DMT, but instead SPEAKING on DMT, the powerful psychedelic drug that’s also found in the human brain, and the nature of consciousness. It is possible that he’ll be ON DMT too, but that part of the entertainment isn’t included in the cost of admission, which is only $3.

Amplify 4.0

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] The list of DJs lined up for Amplify 4.0 is almost comically long. At last count there were 49 acts listed on the flier, the biggest names being Bentz, Buzz Trillington, Local Heroes, Ronin, and Rufus Gibson. If you recognize any of those names, you’ll likely recognize many of the supporting names too. If not, just know that with five rooms of music you’re likely to find the particular brand of electronic music—bass, electro, house/techno/and trance—that turns you on. Expect some top notch lighting and visuals are lined up too.

Com Truise with Nosja Thing

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Nosaj Thing and Com Truise come from varying ends of the electronic music spectrum. The former, Jason Lee, distinguished himself from his LA peers like Flying Lotus and Tokimonsta through his production of sleek, atmospheric numbers with a spectral bent.
