Radiation

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] If you’ve ever asked yourself questions like “What have I done to deserve this?” or  “Who needs love like that?” then this is your dance party. DJs ArcaTek and Adrian will spin the music of Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, and Yazoo for a special one-off Radiation dance party at The Underground Nightclub on Friday, January 23.

DNB Presents...

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] On Friday, January 23, Discover New Beats brings DJs Loki, Dub’l Forte, Marssick, and Heezy to Broadway Joe’s on Main Street for a series of extended DJ sets that will cover sounds ranging from trap, to drum and bass, and dubstep.

Chicago 10: Speak Your Peace

[SCREENING] In 1968, after the Democratic National Convention, eight anti-war demonstrators were arrested and tried for conspiracy. They’re now known as the Chicago 8, but if you only know the story of “the eight,” then you don’t know the whole story. Through the use of vivid animation, voice-overs from celebrities like Hank Azaria, Nick Nolte, and Mark Ruffalo, and a rocking soundtrack featuring music by Rage Against the Machine, the Beastie Boys, and Black Sabbath, director Brett Morgen tells the story of the Chicago 10 in Chicago 10: Speak Your Peace.

Space-Bar

[DANCE] Buffalo area dancers, aerialists and musicians are teaming up to bring Space-Bar to the ALT Theatre on Saturday, January 24. The performance showcases each dancer’s individual contemporary dance style merged with dance trapeze, resulting in breathtakingly explorative works of movement art. Dancers taking part in the performance, directed by Phil Wackerfuss, include Aaron Water, Ashley Vita Verde, Erica Cope, Jess Moore, Laura Jean Castelluzzo and Monica Karwan.

Joey Diaz

[COMEDY] Though comedian Joey Diaz has been in dozens of movies and television shows including My Name is Earl and The Longest Yard, it was his series of comedy albums—The Testicle Testaments—that put him on the radar for most comedy fans. Diaz is also known for his appearances on the top rated iTunes comedy show, The Joe Rogan Experience.

The Traditional

Punk-pop? Pop-punk? Emo? Whatever term you prefer, the idea was to put a melodic, digital spin on the classically agro-punk ideal, offering a precision makeover that captured the collective imaginations of aughties teens.

moe.

[JAM] When most people think of Buffalo and its role in music, names like the Goo Goo Dolls and Rick James come up out of sheer record sales and pop culture reputability. If you focus on general genres though, you could argue Buffalo’s biggest contribution has come in the form of the jam band moe.. In the jam band world, there are few in the circle outside of Phish that have a bigger draw.

SAFEWOR(L)D

[MULTI-MEDIA] Attaching an Oculus Rift headset to your face and pressing the on button is like stepping through a wormhole—and that wormhole is coming to a living room near you very soon. Imagine stepping into a video game or movie. You turn your head, look up or down, and examine the world around you just as you do IRL. Now virtual reality is officially a part of real life, and our image of what is possible in a virtual reality environment is sharpening each day.

Buffalo Film Seminars XXX

[FILM] If hearing about the 30th anniversary of the Buffalo Film Seminars makes you feel old, remember that there are two a year, so it’s only half that age. Still, 15 years is impressive by any standard. The now-venerable film series has survived its relocation from downtown’s Market Arcade to the Amherst Theater, and launches its spring schedule with a traditional silent film featuring live keyboard accompaniment by Philip Carli.

Genocide Pact

[METAL] Formed by members of Disciple of Christ and Protestor in 2013, Washington D.C.’s Genocide Pact has developed a reputation for churning out unfathomably loud, sludgy death metal which draws from the legacies of their old-school predecessors (Obituary, Carcass, and Entombed to name a few). The outfit’s sparse releases unveil a brutal sound coated in distortion and grisly riffs that stagger alongside brooding rhythms and guttural incantations.

Like Pacific

[ROCK] Toronto-based five piece Like Pacific comes fresh-faced to 2015 with a newly inked deal via Pure Noise/New Damage and a subsequent self-titled EP (actually, their third), out this week. It’s punk-pop in the aughties tradition but with some welcome twists, particularly on the new material: progressive song structures, vocals that sound less tuned/more human, and a secret weapon in the form of a punishing drummer.

Bill Nehill

[ROCK] A true Buffalonian troubadour, former New World Records guy Bill Nehill celebrates the release of a new cassette this week (that’s right, he’s putting out a tape!), entitled Forward to Ministry Autumn. The six songs were written last summer and recorded in the fall: solo, one microphone, inside a grain silo. Surely this will prove to be the perfect treatment for Nehill’s contemplative style.
