Spotlight: Orations
When Jess Collins returned to Buffalo after a stint in Arizona, it was mainly about music and musical personalities. Some 13 years later, she’s become the front-woman for a local post-punk quartet of Buffalo scene staples called Orations, which released a mighty promising EP last year.
Exit Ritual : A Night of Rhythmic Noise, IDM, Dark Ambient & Death Industrial
[INDUSTRIAL] In 1987, Manchester’s Rob Brown and Sean Booth formed an electronic music duo called Autechre. They signed to a then unknown electronic music record label called Warp Records and became pioneers not only of IDM (“Intelligent Dance Music” an outdated term for “living room techno”) but also helped usher dark ambient techno sounds into the scene and took the idea of industrial electronic music to the next level.
Rumourz
[ROCK] Not going in for the full-on Fleetwood Mac attack at the First Niagara this weekend? We don’t blame you—ticket prices were high. Here’s a Plan B, or a nearby way of extending the fun after the show lets out: Check out WNY’s own Rumourz on Saturday, January 31 at Buffalo Iron Works; a four-piece that takes great pleasure in recreating the Southern California vibe that took Fleetwood Mac from being a British blues outfit to becoming a household name all over the world.
The Reverend Horton Heat
[ROCKABILLY] The semi-legendary cow-punk hybrid trio, The Reverend Horton Heat, led by Jim Heath returns to Buffalo this Thursday, January 29 for a gig at The Tralf. Out supporting Rev, released this time last year on the Victory label, the new disc features a typically amusing single, “Let Me Teach You How to Eat.” Not a whole lot has changed about what these guys do—a nod in the direction of consistency—but with an if it ‘aint broke, don’t mess with it attitude.
Chauncey Tails
[ELECTRONIC] Gowanda native Chauncey Tails straddles the DJ/Producer lines, remixing and recreating the work of others interspersed with compositions all his own.
Proles with Wolf
A by-product of the UB Rugby Team, Proles only began playing together last fall, but their frayed, punk-edged four-song demo is already up and streaming on bandcamp. Led by singer / guitarist Chelsea O’Donnell, Wolf—now a trio—recently released the single, “Infectious,” which reveals pop smarts tempered by a scrappy vibe that suits O’Donnell’s throaty pipes.
Pine Fever
[FOLK] Everybody’s favorite scumerican (scummy american?) folk band, Pine Fever, returns to Black Rock’s newest hotspot, Hot Mama’s Canteen on Saturday, January 31.
Funktional Flow
[FUNK] Upstate New York has long-been a hotbed for talent across all genres, and the blended nature of jam is no different. From Buffalo to Albany, there are many bands that play in this space and excel at live improvisations and touching on various tones. This Friday, January 30 Buffalo’s Funktional Flow and Albany’s Formula 5 will be teaming up for a solid night of funky jams at Nietzsche’s.
The Freeway Revival
[ROCK] It can be tough to find quality musicianship and honest songs that harken back to the roots of what define American music these days. The radio is over saturated with manufactured songs that are rife with a marketing appeal and the goal of mass popularity. This Friday, January 30, Buffalo Iron Works will be the place to be to catch some music that has power behind it in its authenticity.
