[INDIE] This Friday night, Rochester’s five piece indie-rock outfit Scope & Figure will be playing at Nietzsche’s as part of their 2015 Exemplary Sports Magic Summer Tour. Fronted by Thomas Varner, they demonstrate a certain tenacity for melody with an edge, their music rife with dissonant chord progressions and punctuating rhythms that are further accentuated with Varner’s resonant voice.
For all of western New York’s charms, things like taxation and political malefaction help to keep Buffalo down. It’s like every two steps forward are met with a step back. But the biggest thing holding us back is our own provincialism. It’s on display every time Carl Paladino denounces the “damn Asians” at UB, and every time any word is uttered on Buffalo hate radio.
For months they’ve kept it quiet—their plans, their renovations, even the name of the space. A sign on the doorway at 218 Grant Street, adjacent to Sweetness 7 cafe, reads “Secret Storefront.” Where most businesses list their hours, there is a sign that says, “Open Spontaneously.”
