Story: Working in Public, George the Bail Bondsman

Working in the shadow of downtown Buffalo’s brutalist concrete city court building, in a rusty and DIY-repaired Ford van, is bail bondsman George Osei Gyamfi. George works seven days a week and is strategically positioned before the main entrance of city court in the center of the block.

The Public sat with Gyamfi in the van, listening to mellow pop tunes on 96.1 for an hour, learning the ropes of what it takes to be one of a handful of bond brokers working on the street.

The Public Picnic

[PICNIC] If you didn’t attend the first Public Picnic (shame on you!), expect a safe space to speak your mind and/or ask any questions you have. For our next installment, next Wednesday, July 15 underneath the Cottonwood tree at Silo City (it will happen indoors on site if it rains), D.O.P.E. Collective will have a table with information, and the picnic will be anchored by a piece from Pure Ink Poetry’s Lazyrus and Solomon Dixon.

Tuesday Night Flicks: Moonrise Kingdom

[SCREENING] If the rain holds off, Buffalo is in for a treat at Tuesday Night Flicks at Canalside. For the second edition of the monthly outdoor movie screening, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation and Arts Services Initiative of Western New York will feature their second Wes Anderson movie of the year, Moonrise Kingdom. Canalside sets up about 100 Adirondack chairs, but those who can’t find a seat are welcome to bring their own or lay out a picnic blanket.

Capen Garden Walk

[ART] Join the University Heights Arts Association for a day of arts, architecture, and fun activities for families. This garden walk will include the unveiling of the new sculpture garden at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, which includes work by local artists William Herod, Richard Rockford, Robert Then, Mollie Atkinson, Ken Kash, and Lawrence Kinney.

Black Swan Block Party

[PARTY]  The Black Swan Lounge on Elmwood near Allen has a beautiful patio and they’ll put it to good use this Saturday, July 11 for a daytime block party. The Igloo Music crew will take over the patio for an afternoon party featuring DJs SwaggleRock, Eyes Everywhere, Spacelines, Nickie Fowler, Veyeb, Charlie Abbott, and Lydia.

Def Leppard

[ROCK] Got too much time on your hands? 97 Rock is sponsoring the Western New York stop for this package tour as their annual Weenie Roast party, featuring headliners Def Leppard along with Styx and Tesla. Come sail away on a metal-tinged trip down memory lane blended with some proggy, classic rock goodness.
