Spotlight: A Survey of the Buffalo State Runway Student Designers
On April 16, Buffalo State College’s Fashion and Textile Technology Department will hold their annual Runway fashion show. The professional level show aims to highlight the work of student and alumni designers, who work with local boutiques, models, and hair and makeup stylists. These students are keyed into the Buffalo fashion scene, so this week we surveyed the group for their ideas on what’s trending and how they percieve fashion in Buffalo.

Soft Focus
[ART] Prism Gallery’s latest exhibit, Soft Focus, brings the photography of two Buffalo-based, genderqueer artists, Obsidian B. and Pierce McClearly. According to the artists, the exhibit is ”a subtle but bold declaration of the body and space that two individuals occupy in life” and is meant to challenge ideas about gender in society. The exhibit opens this Friday, April 1 and features the live music of Shevy & the Pulse.
Garcia Project
[TRIBUTE] Creating set lists based on vintage Jerry Garcia Band shows from the 1970s through the 1990s, Garcia Project takes Grateful devotion up a notch with a meticulous eye for detail. Plus, there’s nothing like getting a nod of approval from JGB keyboardist Melvin Seals, who’s has let Garcia Project’s Mik Bondy sit in with his still-touring version of the Jerry Garcia Band.
The Machine
[TRIBUTE] If you’re at all partial to Pink Floyd, you owe it to yourself to check out The Machine. The proof is in the longevity: if the band’s Floyd recreations were unremarkable, they wouldn’t have survived for 25 years as a profitable touring act. Instead, The Machine continues to awe audiences with stellar, accurate renditions of both well known Floyd tunes and more obscure choices for hardcore fans.
Sixties Future, the Naturalits, Soft Love, Nicholas Brooks
[INDIE] Sixties Future’s debut four song EP (all ‘s-word’ song titles) is a mighty impressive affair, though the Americana moniker that’s attached to it isn’t wholly accurate. What is apparent, however, is the local outfit’s respect for classic career artists, from Bowie to Petty (and many in between), delivered with a healthy shot of adrenaline and a production value that’s tight and professional without overt slickness. Chris Couche’s distinctive and throaty pipes make for a fantastic focal point, but the energy behind him is palpable.
Sheer Mag
[ROCK] Three 7” four-song EPs into their barely two-year time together and Philly quartet Sheer Mag is playing Coachella this year and was been written up in Rolling Stone as one of 2015’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” There’s good reason for this: Sheer Mag is the answer to your prayers if you’ve been aching for a band that blends punk and pop without the digital sheen.
Vinyl Mania
[RECORDS] Record Theatre godfather Leonard Silver recently told Buffalo News that vinyl currently accounts for about 40 percent of sales at his two remaining stores. The same article reported that the once defunct wax platter has a 30% overall market share. It’s a far cry from the late 1990s when LPs were absent from music retail altogether, save for some tiny used music shops that somehow managed to survive (mainly on secondhand CD sales).
Buffalo Gamelan Club Open House
[GAMELAN] On Friday, April 1, the Buffalo Gamelan Club will hold an open house from 7pm-10pm at their temporary location at 1526 Main Street for those interested in learning about gamelan music and for those who might be of assistance in finding a permanent home for the club. There will be a demonstration by current students of the Buffalo Gamelan Club, followed by an open demo for anyone who would like to play the ins
Gypsy Jazz Jam
[JAZZ] Jazz musicians Dave Pinchoff, Ryan Campbell, and Colin Brydalski will have an all-out jam at the Gypsy Parlor on Wednesday, March 30. Amateur musicians are welcome to join in on guitar or sing-a-long to the house band’s jazzy grooves.
The Oh Hellos
[FOLK] Brother-sister led folk rock band The Oh Hellos will come to the Waiting Room on Wednesday, April 6. The band, formed in southern Texas in 2011 are touring on their latest record, Dear Wormwood, a bitter-sweet album that should appeal to fans of Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens alike.
Kryder
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] It’s impossible not to move to Kryder’s latest remix of David Guetta’s “Bang My Head,” which originally featured Sia and Fetty Wap. The remix is set at a blistering pace and takes the formerly fairly boring track to a new level. And that’s been Kryder’s modus operandi. He’s been called the King of Remixes, maintaining the uncanny ability to turn even the blandest of pop songs into dance floor gold, rightly earning the nickname.
Snails
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] The weird EDM sounds of Montreal-based producer Snails have jokingly earned his style the nickname “vomitstep.” Not because the music is gross or disgusting, because it’s not, it’s all quite well produced, but more so because Snails kind of throws in everything and the kitchen sink into his dubby left field bass productions. In the past year he’s collaborated with the likes of Jack U and Big Gigantic, and released music on Skrillex’s Owsla Records label.
