Spotlight: Jim Cielencki, The Human Pac-Man

Jim Cielencki has a thirst for the unknown. No matter what he’s pursuing he goes into it with full force and explores all the possibilities.

A former BMX rider for Sunday Bikes and former co-owner of Sunday Skate Shop, Cielencki’s latest endeavor is running, which he began four years ago. Starting on New Year’s Day, he set out to run every street in the city with his Mile by Mile project. He plans to finish the project on May 29 when he runs the Buffalo Marathon, which includes the final streets he has left to run.

Architects of Air

[ART] Since 1992 the Architects of Air have taken their traveling art instillations all over the world. They call their walk-in, inflatable art-structures “luminaria,” and they’re truly a sight to see. For five days—Thursday, May 26 thorugh Monday, May 30—the Luminariums will be on view at the Outer Harbor, so bring the whole family to experience the spectacle that these air-based art pieces are. Kids under 12 are $5, adults are $8.

Beer for Cats

[BEER] Beer for Cats isn’t what it sounds like. Please, please don’t give beer to your cats. On the other hand, do drink beer for the benefit of cats! The 8th Annual Beer For Cats, a benefit party for the Ten Lives Club—a cat adoption organization—will take place on Friday, May 27 at Mister Goodbar. The party will feature a silent auction, brewery merch, and theme baskets.

Tiny Moving Parts

[EMO] Benson, Minnesota trio Tiny Moving Parts gets big points for disrupting the emo template. Largely considered an emo band at the core, TMP evolves considerably on the brand new Celebrate, out May 20 on the Triple Crown label. While there’s a hearty helping of woe-is-me sadness and anxiety to snack on, there’s also a fairly wide range of emotions expressed on the disc, which still showcases the mathy, progressive penchant that separates the familially-based band from its peers.

Drug Party Tapes 5 Year Anniversary Show

[INDIE] Drug Party Tapes strives to keep the concept of a grassroots indie label alive, and so far it’s working pretty well: the free download and cassette label is celebrating its five year anniversary at Mohawk Place this Friday night. Spearheaded by Stephen Floyd of One Percent Press, the label merely attempts to cover costs, allowing free digital access to all of its releases (via bandcamp) and cassettes for $5, while providing an accurate snapshot of our punk underground.

Bad Boy Bill

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Sky Bar will kick off their annual rooftop DJ series with a set by Bad Boy Bill on Friday, May 27. The EDM DJ comes in from Chicago with sharply styled set of house and trance music which he’s perfected over a lengthy career. Bad Boy Bill is also a founding partner of the electronic music downloading website Beatport and has been voted “America’s Favorite DJ” by readers of BPM magazine. Local support comes from Xotec. Presented by Factory Night Life.

Capsized Boat Cruise featuring J Paul Getto

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] If you can party on a boat, you know it’s summer. Summer in Buffalo is bookended by the Capsized Boat Cruise. The 10th annual Memorial Day party-cruise happens this Sunday, May 29 and this year they’re shipping in J Paul Getto from Boston to headline. The house music producer is a prolific releaser of EPs and can hold down the dance floor, in this case the deck of the Miss Buffalo, a 90 foot long, two story yacht.

Trans* Americans

[ART] Perhaps known to some readers as the go-to photographer for the annual Buffalo Golden Gloves boxing tournament, Errol Daniels is exhibiting a collection of portraits called Trans* Americans this Friday. Finding themselves as a flashpoint in the politics of an election year, this show is chance to peel away the layers of these politics and find the people underneath them. 

Emulsified #5: Passion of Joan of Arc

[FILM] The Emulsified series that showcases highlights from the UB Media Study department collection hits the Hallwalls cinema on Thursday with Dreyer’s epic The Passion of Joan of Arc. The once controversial silent picture was produced in 1928, and Renée Jeanne Falconetti’s performance remains a singular achievement in film history. The film will receive a live score from Buffalo music handywoman Pam Swarts.
