Infringement Festival 2016: Stained Glass Artist, Chelsea Black
Buffalo’s greatest Louisianian stained glass artist, Chelsea Black, has been working tirelessly in preparation for the Infringement Festival. Although her opening this week marks the first public showcase of her work to date, Chelsea is no Southern fledgling; she first began experimenting with the medium of glass way back in the days of her youth.

#DemsinPhilly Sketchbook Day 1
Our man in Philadelphia, Marquil from EmpireWire, reflects on the first day of the DNC.
A protest march from Philadelphia’s City Hall to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall along Market Street passed in front of New York’s delegation to the Democratic Party convention
Rayland Baxter
[INDIE] Sandwiched somewhere between alt-country and indie-pop, Rayland Baxter’s second album Imaginary Man (ATO, 2015) garnered positive attention from NPR and the New York Times, praising his ability to write powerhouse songs that deliver memorable characters and brain-branding hooks.
Younger Then
[INDIE] Local newbie quartet will celebrate the release of its self-titled debut EP, an impressive sounding four-song sampler of possibilities that’s slick but not overdone. Taking cues from bands as disparate as Minus the Bear and Kings of Leon, the results are tuneful and catchy with just enough edginess to satisfy your dark-side sweet tooth.
Yes
[ROCK] When classic prog-rockers Yes released Tales from Topographic Oceans in late 1973, the general consensus was they’d gone off the rails. Four songs on four sides, loosely based on four bodies of Hindu texts that front man Jon Anderson had found referenced in the footnotes of a book. “A lot of people thought we were nuts, but we were breaking barriers at that time,” said drummer Alan White, calling from near the San Juan islands in Washington.
Out of Body with Basement Rat
[PUNK] Dreamland will host an odd, full-on punk show this Thursday, July 28. Out of Body comes in from Texas with their brand of space-punk, lady punk rockers Basement Rat will step up to the plate, Buffalo rock-punk band Slower Cooker joins in, and the show is rounded out by the more aggressive Grain Assault.

Parachute
[POP] Discovered fresh out of college in Charlottesville, VA, and signed to Dave Matthews Band’s Red Light Management, Parachute makes no bones of their big pop aspirations. Their latest, Wide Awake (Vanguard) finds them pared down from a five-piece to a trio, thus creating greater space in the arrangements and offering a new, distilled version of the pop sound at their core.
An Evening with Mark Twain with Pat Kewley
[PERFORMANCE] Your grandfather’s Mark Twain impersonator was Channel 7 meteorologist Mike Randall. Pat Kewley is not your grandfather’s Mark Twain, but Kewley is a highlight in Buffalo’s performance art comedy scene, a scene that includes Kewley and a patch of misfits that somehow includes the now retired meteorologist Don Paul. No meteorologists are likely to be in Sugar City come Friday night, but there will be music by Welks Mice and free hot sauce for the first 40 patrons.
Mid-Summer Night Draw and Silent Auction
[ART] A fund-raiser for the people. It’s five bucks to get it but from there you can share Asbury Hall with 36 artists spanning the spectrum of experience and medium, furiously spending two 45-minute rounds drawing; a night of whimsy for a summer that sorely needs it. After the rounds, the results are auctioned off with bids starting at $39.

Weeding Through the Differences
[INFRINGEMENT] Fertility is the theme of this Infringement Festival oddball show and the choice of venues, WestSide Herbs and Alliums—an urban farm located at 251 Vermont Street—couldn’t be more perfect.
Sander Kleinenberg
[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] Remixer of Madonna, lover of Daft Punk, and DJ as mixing artist, Sander Kleinenberg is a career DJ who has yet to find his limits. The 44-year-old Dutch DJ, known for his massive house and trance music sets, comes to Buffalo’s Sky Bar on Friday, July 29 as part of their rooftop DJ series presented by Factory Nightlife. Local support comes courtesy of Kitz.
Picnic in the Parkway
[FOLK] Ragtime throwback band the Fredtown Stompers will headline the Elmwood Village Association’s Picnic in the Parkway concert series this Tuesday, August 2 in Bidwell Park. The band should provide the perfect musical setting for a free, family-friendly outing in the heart of the Elmwood Village. This concert marks the penultimate event in the series, which will wrap up with a performance by the Heavenly Chillbillies next week.
