Neon Toga Party 2 featuring DJ Aphrodite

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] From what I can tell, wearing a toga to this party isn’t mandatory, but it couldn’t hurt. The second Neon Toga Party happens this Friday at the Dnipro Ukrainian Cultural Center and will feature jungle/drum and bass DJ Aphrodite. Hailing from Wales, Aphrodite is a pioneer of the sound, spinning DnB for upwards of 20 years. He’s been known as the “Godfather of Jungle” and the King of Beats and also runs the well known record label Aphrodite Recordings.

Diamond Nights featuring Mario Bee, Much of Many, Crop Top, and Chauncey Tails

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] The first event in what sounds like will become a new monthly event series at Milkie’s happens this Friday, September 2. Titled Diamond Nights (the name was inspired by Lance Diamond, the man who spent most of his career inside of Milkie’s when it was known as the Elmwood Lounge), the event will feature dance, electronic, and hip hop artists.

2016 Art Chase

[SCAVENGER HUNT] Hit the streets this Friday for a fun scavenger hunt. As part of this month’s First Friday programming, the Allentown Association and Allentown First Friday Gallery Walk will present Art Chase, an interactive scavenger hunt that takes place in Allentown. Teams of four will take on challenges that range from doing an interpretive dance outside of a gallery to getting a tattoo, so make sure you choose your team wisely.

Necropolis Metropolis: Photography by Mark Thomas Duggan

[ART] The subject of this art show is as creepy as it gets. Photographer Mark Thomas Duggan spent one year in the Manila North Cemetery in the Philippines. If that sounds like a long time to spend in a cemetery, know that an entire community of living people live in this cemetery, permanently. Though Manila is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, there’s also a serious housing shortage, which is forcing folks to find shelter and protection from the harsh streets in unusual places.

The Temperance Movement with The Revivalists

[ROCK] The concept is that by forcing yourself not to think about something, you will think of little else. It’s referred to in psych circles as White Bear Syndrome, coined by Professor Daniel Wegner in his book White Bears and Other Unwanted Thoughts, but Wegner got the idea from a Tolstoy short story. It shares idealism with the pink elephant in the room, the thing we’re all trying not to talk about that’s standing before us, larger than life.

G-Nome Project

[JAM] Call it livetronica, electro-funk or—my personal fave—grilled cheese funk, but the G-Nome Project is basically a jam-band from Tel Aviv. And they’ve amassed a pretty decent following with their trusty blend of danceable riffs and improv passages, designed to get you moving, sweaty, off on a tangent and all blissed-out. It’s proven enough of a phenom that a documentary is being produced about the Israeli quartet, which remains a huge draw in their country while building their fan base here in the States.

Voice of Addiction

[PUNK] Chicago’s Voice of Addiction straddles the old-world punk vibe of bands like Fugazi and Circle Jerks and noise-rock hybrid artists like Dinosaur Jr. The results are plenty edgy with progressive, math-y touches. Add in their socially conscious songwriting approach (they’re definitely not emo whiners) and you’ve got something fairly unusual.

The Muckers

[PUNK] They call it Culture Punk, we call it wacky, but either way, it’s fun. Not to be confused with the Iranian garage band of the same name, The Muckers are out of Atlanta, but they’re fronted by native Buffalonian Jeff Shaw, who you might remember from way back in the Pug Mahones. Together, they blend everything under the kitchen sink: traditional Irish music, bluegrass, and folk, fused atop a punk foundation and then seasoned with eclectic bits of zydeco, klezmer, and other left-field genres.

Laugh and Other Drugs Comedy Showcase

[COMEDY] Likely named (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) after Edward Zwick’s 2010 American comedy-drama film about Viagra (based on the book Hard Sell), this new comedy revue at Babeville’s 9th Ward offers another potentially great outlet for Buffalo’s burgeoning standup talent pool. Overseen by comic Zach Dietsch, Laugh and Other Drugs is running bi-monthly and already feels like a hit.

Super Tugger

[PUNK] Buffalo punk cover band The Card Cheats, now re-imagined as the all-original-material-spawning Super Tugger (whose refreshingly under-produced single “Broken Bones” is getting spins on Alternative 101.7’s Localized show) will team up with hard-rocking faves the Soul Butchers for their live debut. For those already mourning the Card Cheats, fear not: Super Tugger will morph back into its former self for a set of covers after busting out their new material.

Eats Everything

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] The rise of Eats Everything has been pretty meteoric. Now a household name on the electronic music scene, the 36-year-old English producer’s first track, “Entrance Song” was only released in 2011 on the then freshly minted boutique house record label Pets Recordings. Now, five years later, Eats Everything a.k.a. Daniel Pearce has played some of the world’s coolest underground clubs and biggest dance music festivals.

200 Kids Outside

[HIP HOP] Cloud rap duo, and previous subject of a Spotlight feature in The Public, 200 Kids Outside play this Saturday, September 3 at Milkie’s. About to drop their fifth album this year, Love is For the Birds, the duo looks forward to playing songs from all their albums. Joining them is T-Diddy, a Buffalo musician known for blending rock and hip hop in his projects.
