Ceaselessly Into the Past: Julieta, Kedi

Alfred Hitchcock fans will be the best audience for Julieta, the new film by Pedro Almodovar that was once meant to be his first American film, a starring vehicle for Meryl Streep. Adapted from three stories by Alice Munro, the film plays like an exercise in seeing how many Hitchcock references Almodovar can indulge, mostly to Vertigo and Rebecca, without actually remaking either of those stories.

Art+Feminism's Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

[ART & JOURNALISM] A 2011 survey reveled that less than 10 percent of Wikipedia contributors identify as female. Imagine how that might subtly (or not-so-subtly) skew the online compendium’s coverage of, for example, women in arts and literature? As part of an effort to address that imbalance, Squeaky Wheel hosts the Art+Femininism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon this Saturday, March 11, 2-7pm.

Grace Stumberg

[FOLK] If you’ve been to see Joan Baez in the last few years, you’ve likely been impressed with the gal singing harmony. Though she still sounds vocally strong and quite recognizable in her mid-70s, Baez has employed a young lady from Buffalo as backup singer (as well as personal assistant, which is the role she was originally hired for) to thicken her live sound.

Four Year Strong

[PUNK] Debating whether it’s punk-pop or melodic hardcore seems like splitting hairs, but Worcester, Massachusetts-based Four Years Strong has struck enough of a power-chord with audiences to have sustained more than 15 years of touring and recording since their high school beginnings, opening strings of dates for Good Charlotte, Rise Against, Wonder Years, Bad Religion and plenty of others. Initially signed to Pete Wentz’s Decaydence label, they eventually landed a contract with Universal Music.

The Isley Brothers

[FUNK] Any act that’s sustained an entertainment career for more than 60 years (yup, you read that right) is bound to have had some ups and downs. In the case of Ohio’s Isley Brothers, it’s been a bumpier ride than average. But that hasn’t stopped original founding member Ronald Isley and younger brother Ernie from carrying on the family name with a road show that pulls into the Seneca Niagara Casino on Saturday, March 11.
