Pablo Francisco

[COMEDY] Comedian Pablo Francisco’s style was most likely heavily formed during his early days as a writer for Mad TV. His style to this day is still very character and impression based. Fan favorites include Arnold Schwarzenegger selling tortillas, Mark Wahlberg, Busta Rhymes, and of course, our president, Donald Trump, which he has the ability to transform in and out of at a rapid pace.  The 43-year old comedian comes to Helium Comedy Club this Thursday, March 2 through Saturday, March 4 for five shows.

Twiddle

[JAM] This summer should be a big one for Vermont-based jam-band Twiddle. They’re gearing up to host the second edition of their own music festival, Tumble Down, which last year featured like-minded bands like Turkuaz, Cabinet, and Nahko. They haven’t announced this year’s line up yet for the festival that will take place at Waterfront Park in Burlington, Vermont, but that announcement is inevitably coming soon, and perhaps the band will hint at it at some point during their two night stand here in Buffalo this weekend.

The Head and the Heart

[INDIE] If you’re wondering why Seattle-based rock band The Head and The Heart are coming to Buffalo sans their front man, Josiah Johnson, it’s because his life has been in mortal danger due to a substance abuse problem. “The thinking was kind of like if we don’t do this, he’s going to die,” drummer Tyler Williams told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an interview last week.

Throwaway

[ROCK] The avant-rock lady duo Throwaway will perform at Mohawk Place next Wednesday, March 8. Self-proclaimed “rock goddesses of legends,” their heavy acoustic sound and angsty vocals are expressive and original. With their freshly released single “Milk Song” on Youtube, their following is growing.

Big Wreck

[ROCK] Listening to their latest album, Grace Street, you might not guess that Canadian rock band Big Wreck formed in 1994. The album sounds firmly planted in contemporary rock music, with their slickly produced “One Good Piece of Me” displaying their knack for crafting a solid pop-rock track. Reformed in 2010 after an eight year hiatus, the band has released three albums since then, including Grace Street which was released earlier this month.

Interview: K.Flay

[INDIE] Kristine Meredith Flaherty never planned on getting into music. As a native from Wilmette, Illinois, she had grown up with a dad who shredded on guitar. In an effort to share his talent with her, he showed her some basic chords, but that’s where her musical journey seemingly ended. It wasn’t until college when she found herself in a conversation about music with someone and was challenged by them to write and record a song—that’s when she became K.Flay.

GreenWatch Sunday Morning TV-Tundra Swans on the Niagara

Oh My Gosh, it has been an unusual winter.  Record breaking warm temperatures, iceless lakes and rivers, and still the birds come here.  During the winter months birds migrate from northern breeding territories to overwinter in what are often the first open waters to the south- including and especially the Niagara River.  Each winter about 30 species of waterfow numbering in the hundreds of thousands or more, including ducks, geese, and swans come here to spend the winter in what may be their Miami.

Spicer's Briefing Room

Language Counts:Spicer’s Briefing Room
#ConstitutionalCrime

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer represents the voice of the Trump Administration to the American public.  Donald Trump represents Donald Trump who to the surprise and concern of many of us is also the President of the United States. Can you imagine what goes through that mind of Donald Trump when he thinks about that? Your comments are welcome.

Giving Fake News a Good Name: The Yes Men WILL Make You Laugh

I am prompted by the discovery that their 2009 film The Yes Men Fix the World is availble to watch for free on YouTube to reprint the review I wrote of it at the time. If you don’t know their work, the Yes Men are two activists who do fake news the hard way, by staging satirical events for the press to cover. Clearly I would write the review somewhat differently now, but I think it’s still valid. And I want to encourage you all the watch the movie, linked after the review: as I tried to make clear in my opening, it is really, really funny.

How to Survive the Trump Era

America’s leading media, like The New York Times and The Washington Post, have so far refused to normalize Trump’s abnegation of American values. It is not normal for the US to have a president who rejects judicial independence; replaces the most senior military and intelligence officials at the core of national security policymaking with a far-right media zealot; and, in the face of North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test, promotes his daughter’s business ventures.

Spotlight: The Spirit of Nina Simone featuring Drea d'Nur

She’s a proud single mother of five from Buffalo who makes a living solely as a musician and now she’s taking on the spirit of Nina Simone. Her name is Drea d’Nur and her vision is to embody the spirit of Nina on stage at Kleinhans Music Hall, the same venue that Nina performed at 53 years ago, in December 1964. But when d’Nur booked the gig, she didn’t know that.
