Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

[CHORUS] The BGMC has titled their 2018-19 season, The Stories We Weave, putting a conceptual spin on their annual offerings that speaks to these strange times by reminding that there’s strength in numbers. At a time when something as seemingly innocuous as your choice of retail outlets can cause hateful discourse on social media, BGMC – launched on September 11, 2001, by the way — is here to assert the relevance of gay choruses as an unwavering, unifying faction of community.

The Bottle Rockets

[AMERICANA] As a genre, Americana has become somewhat of a catchall: if it twangs but lacks that gahd-awful mainstream country polish, we’re calling it Americana. And that’s fine. As Shovels and Rope’s Cary Ann Hearst pointed out to me in an interview earlier this year, it gives many artists, “…a place to go,” which, from a marketing standpoint, is a boon. Generally speaking, artists don’t want to have much to do with the marketing end of their careers, but it’s a big help for the rest of us if we can relate music in relative terms. Out of the St.

BIFF 2018: An Embarrassment of Riches

So here’s my conundrum: I want to do everything I can to encourage all of you to check out at least some of the film unspooling this weekend at the latest Buffalo International Film Festival. The festival organizers have made a few dozen of the feature films they will be showing available to me for preview. I appreciate the opportunity, but I really don’t have time to screen 20 or more movies. And besides, I would much rather see them on the big screen at the North Park, or even the smaller screens at Hallwalls or Squeaky Wheel.

MC Chris

[HIP HOP] MC Chris broke into hip hop in an unusual way: contributing music to Adult Swim shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and working on shows like Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, and Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. That’s how he first gained his reputation as a “nerdcore” rapper, which has been solidified by albums with names like Dungeon Master of Ceremonies and MC Chris is Dead Ten albums deep, the 43-year old artist shows no signs of slowing, releasing two albums in the last two years, including his latest, MC Chris is Great at Music.

Crystallized, Venus Vacation, and Velvet Bethany

[INDIE] Sugar City is the place to be this weekend if you’re looking for something heavy, fun, and noisy. Four-piece experimental rock band, Crystallized, comes in from Petersburg, Florida for this one to deliver their electronic-tinged noise rock. They’ll be joined by post-rock band, Venus Vacation, and female-fronted garage rock band Velvet Bethany. Head to Sugar City this Saturday, October 6 for this one.
