Spotlight: Eyes Everywhere's Ultimate Summer Playlist

Partying on a patio on a summer day in Buffalo with hometown boys Kyle Tatum and Brian Doyle, better known as Eyes Everywhere, is something every resident should do as often as possible. It’s a rejuvenating experience—dancing in the sunlight to bassy house music. The duo’s most recent party was last weekend on the back patio of Preservation Pub in Allentown, where they shared the outdoor DJ booth with the Detroit-based DJ pair Golf Clap. The show served as an “official pre-party” for Detroit’s Movement Festival, the annual house and techno bash that happens each year in downtown Detroit.

Totally Buffalo Festival

[FESTIVAL] The tagline for the first ever Totally Buffalo Festival at Buffalo Riverworks this Sunday, May 27 is “celebrating all things Buffalo!” Those things include “East Side” barbecue, beef on weck from Eckl’s, local bands like the Growlers Blues Band, 90 West, White Chocolate, and more, and a bunch of other stuff that screams Buffalo.

Slow Caves

[INDIE] There’s a lot going on under the hood with Slow Caves. There’s a bit of emo, some 1980s pop, even some surf rock. What that means at the end of the day is that the band, made up of Danish brothers Jakob and Oliver Mueller, as well as friends David Dugan and Jackson Lamperes have a pretty unique sound. Their latest record, Desert Minded is equal parts pop sensible emo and weirdo indie rock. And it’s all done at kind of a slow motion speed—or at least a slower speed than you’d expect—which gives it a bit of a stoner, psychedelic tinge too.

Mushroomhead

[METAL] Masked metal band Mushroomhead returns to Buffalo for a show at the Waiting Room on Sunday, May 28. The Cleveland-based heavy metal band formed in 2013, but in recent years have gone through some major line up changes, welcoming back original vocalist Jason Popson, and bringing a few new members into the fold to complete the seven piece band. The highly theatrical metal band will be joined this Sunday by Sunflower Dead, the Browning, RelicSeed, Squatch, and Vokillz.

Noo Phone in the Black Space

[AUGMENTED REALITY] There’s been some talk recently about Buffalo’s grain elevators at Silo City being turned into a national park one day and if and when that happens, let’s count on making sure that vision includes the cultural events that have brought so many people into that hallowed space in recent years. It’s been a proving ground for area and national artists, a place to experiment with the sonic and historic layers present along the Buffalo River.

Formula 5 and Space Junk

[JAM] Formula 5 is a four-piece band from upstate New York. Their latest album, All Points North, is a nine-track jam rock album that is rooted in organic jams and explores spirituality and natural processes. Highlights include the jazzy “It Goes…” and the upbeat album opener “Come Along.” Live, the band sticks closely to their improvisational roots, but still manage to occasionally sneak in some covers.

Adele Givens

[COMEDY] Comedian Adele Givens actually has a right to stake her claim as the “Queen of Comedy”—Givens was crowned winner of the Crown Royal Comedy competition in the city of Chicago on February 3rd 1990. We’re pretty sure that’s a valid lifetime designation. Since then Givens has appeared on many TV sitcoms such as Martin, The Steve Harvey Show, The Hughleys, and others. Now, she’s on the stand up comedy circuit with five shows lined up at Buffalo’s Helium Comedy Club, this Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28.

Buffalo Chamber Players and Lehrer Dance

[MUSIC + DANCE] The Buffalo Chamber Players are one of the finest things to happen to the region’s classical music scene in the last decade. And Lehrer Dance continues to be one of the region’s most innovative and polished professional dance companies. Count on the Albright-Knox, where Buffalo Chambers Players is in residence, to facilitate a collaboration between the two. The performance takes place on Thursday, May 25 in the gallery’s auditorium.

The Hovelists CD Release Show

[PUNK] Punk rock can come from anywhere, even the rolling meadows of Olean where a home studio recording project in Chris Curcio’s basement evolved into The Hovelists. Now working as a duo with bassist Josh Wells and seeking out a permanent drummer, The Hovelists, who take their name from a Philip K. Dick novel, will celebrate the release of their debut full length, Error of the Second Kind, at Mohawk Place on Saturday, May 27.

Memorial Day Weekend at Canalside

[EXERCISE] If you’re looking for something to do this Memorial Day weekend, Canalside has three straight days of physical activities lined up that are fun for the whole family. Saturday, May 27 will feature a Artisan Market with local arts and crafts, music, and food, as well as a Bubble Soccer (?!) tournament, and a kids fitness class. Sunday, May 28 will feature a “Butts, Legs And Thighs” adult fitness class, followed by the African Heritage Food Market, which will feature a plentitude of healthy foods.

Record Theatre Sgt Pepper Release Party and Storewide Sale

[PARTY] The Beatles’ 1967 landmark Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has always made me feel woozy, and perhaps that was the intended effect. It seems oversaturated in so-called “better living through chemistry,” and I can almost see everything trailing and melting into itself as Ringo gets by with a little help and Paul fixes a hole – fairly mundane ideas made glorious when seen through rose colored Lennon specs.

BuffaLoveFest

[FUN] Don’t get this BuffaLoveFest confused with the BuffaLove Music Festival which happens in Franklinville, New York and features a bunch of jam bands. No, this BuffaLoveFest happens at the Buffalo Zoo and features more lions, tigers, and bears than jam bands, of which there are none. Instead, there’ll be a line up of food trucks, artisans, and booze. The event, which typically attracts thousands of people to the Zoo right outside of Delaware Park, is a fundraiser with much of the proceeds from the festival going toward the care of the zoo animals.
