Alexis De Veaux: The Future of Freedom
[LECTURE] Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech called “The Future of Integration” at Kleinhans Music Hall, a speech which imagined a world free of the simmering oppressions of racial and economic injustice and the violence which those oppressions inevitably engendered. (That was November 9, 1967; five months later King was killed.) On Thursday, November 2, Alexis De Veaux—essayist, playwright, poet, former chair of UB’s Women’s Studies Department—will lead a conversation at Canisius College’s Montante Cultural Center called “The Future of Freedom,” marking King’s speech, and examining the conditions in which we live now and where we hope to be 50 years further down the road. And, of course, how we intend to get there. The event is part of Just Buffalo Literary Center’s Civil Writes Project and is free and open to the public.
