The Devon Allman Band
[ROCK] After trying out some other musical styles in his youth to distance himself from being the son of Gregg Allman (who he didn’t meet until his teen years), guitarist Devon Allman finally gave in to the pull of blues-inflected, southern rock and roll. Having bounced between fronting his band Honeytribe and intermittently playing in the “supergroup” Royal Southern Brotherhood with Cyril Neville, Mike Zito, Yonrico Scott and Charlie Wooton, Allman has been focusing on a solo career as he moves into his 40s. His third release, Ride or Die, pushes the envelope of blues-rock tradition, melding sounds and influences as disparate as Curtis Mayfield-inflected soul and the grunge-toned feel of Seattle in the 1990s. It’s an album that parallels Allman’s interior struggles with those of our culture, but it does so with an underlying sense of hope and redemption. Recorded in Nashville with a crack team of session players supplying the grooves, Allman sounds like he’s running toward something rather than running away. Monday, October 31 at the Tralf Music Hall.
