[INDIE] The title Pagans in Vegas implies a sense of being out of one’s element—a natural entity in a glitzy, synthetic world—and perhaps it’s a metaphor for Metric’s transformation. Going back a decade or more, Metric was both edgier and a bit more musically organic. But the much lauded Canadian four-piece has morphed into dreamier textures in recent years, which thankfully hasn’t completely put out the fire at its core. Pagans in Vegas presents the best of both worlds, letting the brains of the operation punch through the synthy haze with hard-hitters like “Lie, Lie, Lie,” “The Shade,” and the more electro-grinding “Cascades.” Front gal Emily Haines runs the show with authority, which she’ll also surely do at Metric’s upcoming Buffalo-area gig Friday night, closing out the Artpark season on the Mainstage with a digital boom.
