Purple Rain at North Park
[FILM] It’s not a great movie by any standards, but Purple Rain was a sizeable hit in 1984 for a mainstream audience that was just getting to know its star, a young musician/singer named Prince. Oh, you’ve heard of him? A lot of people hadn’t at the time.
Loosely based on his own life, Purple Rain is remembered for its electrifying musical performances, all recorded live; the title song won Prince an Oscar for Best Original Song. The film was almost directed by UB graduate James Foley, but he was too busy (think he regrets that now?) and recommended his editor, Albert Magnoli.
You have two chances this weekend to relive the 80s and mourn Prince’s early passing. The North Park will show it Friday at midnight (not 9:30 pm as originally scheduled). Or you can see it for free Saturday at the Riviera in North Tonawanda.
