Mikal Cronin

[INDIE] To describe Mikal Cronin as exactly what he is—a singer/songwriter who makes pop-tinged garage rock—doesn’t do him justice. He’s much more than that—or perhaps he’s just so good at making music of that particular kind that he sticks out among his fellow garage rock revivalists. Though his albums don’t differ dramatically, he’s tapped into some kind of formula that perfectly balances pop with garage rock without sounding formulaic.  For Cronin, every song is a pop song until it erupts into a distorted, grungy chorus, usually at just the moment when you’re fiending for an injection of fuzz. His command over his sound becomes obvious as soon as you find yourself in the thick of any of his albums, which land somewhere between the dreamy jangle-rock of Real Estate and the raw noise rock of Ty Segall (with whom Cronin has collaborated extensively, even going on tour with Segall as the bassist of his live band). He manages to work rich string arrangements into the production of his latest album MCIII, toning his sound down from the more overt fuzz pop of 2013’s MCII. ESI and the Tralf present Mikal Cronin at Mohawk Place on Tuesday, September 15 with support from Calvin Love.
