Peelander Z

[PUNK] Just to be clear, Peelander Z is not a Zoolander reference. The self described “Japanese Action Comic Punk” band formed in 1998, three years before the hilarious Ben Stiller movie with the strangely similar name. Anyways, Peelander Z is made up of a few characters: Peelander Yellow, Peelander Purple, Peelander Pink, Peelander Green, and Peelander Black. The band’s line up seems to change pretty regularly; though Yellow is an original member, the rest of the colors seem to rotate.

Trancegiving: Super8 & Tab

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] If you’re looking to burn off some of those Thanksgiving calories and you can manage to roll off of your couch on Thanksgiving night—then get your butt down to Lift Nightclub for a night of dancing  and bass music that they’re calling Trancegiving. Gos Gozah: Black Friday Edition

[DANCE] Billed as “the antithesis of over-commercialized holiday shopping,” Gos Gozah: Black Friday Edition is a dance party for everybody. This is a queer friendly event, and allies are always welcome. DJ Bootyhammer will take the decks with a mix of African dancehall music and a genre of Cuban dance music called Soukous, while ABC Crew packs in some grime-house club beats. It happens this Friday, November 28 at Milkie’s on Elmwood.

Take A Number, Buffalo

We all know Einstein’s thoughts about insanity – dating inevitably is one in the same. We go from bar to bar, look for the one sporting a beanie and a great smile, and still expect different results. Insanity, meet our city of Buffalo.

Let’s take the beer goggles off for a bit. Imagine shots and pints weren’t the factors leading up to talking to that guy or girl. Do you know what or whom you’re looking for now? In the daylight, do you realize that she’s probably your sister’s best friend?

The Word Alive

[ROCK] Lead by former Greeley Estates singer, Tyler Smith, Florida band, The Word Alive are making a dent in the post-hardcore scene with their newest record, Real, released by Fearless records this summer. The record, produced alt rock heavyweight John Feldmann, is the band’s heaviest and most ambitious to date. Check them out at the Waiting Room on Tuesday, December 2 with The Color Morale, Our Last Night and more.

Single Mothers

[ROCK] In an interview with Pitchfork, Single Mothers frontman Drew Thomson lets you know why he abstains from writing overt love songs, “Screaming into a microphone about negative shit is way more fun to me than saying, ‘Sarah, I love your kneecaps and your shoulder’ ” he admits frankly. ”I can do that on a different channel, but Single Mothers is my outlet and I’m going to use it to its full potential as long as I can.” The dark humor and terrifically unbridled abrasiveness is characteristic of the London, Ontario based punk outfit, and paired with systematic

Some Kindsa Love

[LITERARY] Have you ever written a secret sex-infested love note for someone four times your age? Perhaps you’ve been carrying around feelings of unholy animal lust and aren’t sure who to tell. The kinky public readings set to go down at Hallwalls Some Kindsa Love event won’t all be sexual, but they all involve the sharing of thoughts and feelings probably better left buried beneath the dirty sock drawer.

Spotlight: Pam Swarts

Pam Swarts loves Buffalo… most of the time. But when we talked last week, she’d just endured the drive back from Batavia, where she teaches Digital Arts to the masses at Genesse Community College. The commute took place during what will undoubtedly go down in the record books as a crippling blizzard. Her eye-catching Scion is decorated blue with bolts of white lightening, and to know her is to be in on the joke: there’s definitely a creative storm brewing in that car.

Public Call For Shovelers

This Saturday at 9am, Buffalonians willing to spend their Saturday helping our friends in South Buffalo relieve themselves of over 6 feet of snow are encouraged to gather at the Old First Ward Community Center (62 Republic Street) where the coffee will be hot, Mazurek’s Donuts will be plentiful, and the city of good neighbor spirit will be in full effect. The goal? Dig out South Buffalo and help those in need that are buried in the south towns.

They will play the Rapid’s Theater on Niagara Falls on Friday, November 28, their first appearance in the Western New York region. This week we had a quick chat with bassist Bret Bollinger.
