American Animals
In 2004, a quartet of college students in Lexington, Kentucky decided to steal some valuable books from the rare books room of their university library. That ill-fated venture is the basis of American Animals, a film that opens with the onscreen statement, “This is not based on a true story: this is a true story.”

The Choise of Valentines: A Burlesque Cabaret
[BURLESQUE] A whole bunch of artists—from dancers, choreographers, and a full band—will come together for what should be a fun night of burlesque and music at the Gypsy Parlor this Wednesday, June 20. The event, dubbed Choise of Valentines: A Burlesque Cabaret, features Moxy Cleaveland Cabaret from Niagara Falls, who perform a variety of burlesque music they call “narrative burlesque.” They’ll be joined by burlesque dancers choreographed by local artist Vanessa Rae Oswald.

Spotlight: The Tins
For the past six or seven years Binghamton-bred, Buffalo-based indie rock trio, The Tins have garnered national attention for their unique sound. Their rhythms channel the ghosts of 1960s psychedelia, early 2000s indie folk euphoria, and many other musical voices. They have been a growing force of local music scene for awhile and are on a even bigger roll as of late.

Ruby Velle & The Soulphnonics
[SOUL] Ruby Velle & The Soulphnonics craft a type of throwback soul music that fans of acts like Nathaniel Rateliff, Sharon Jones, and Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds should be tuned into. Start with their latest record, The State of All Things, then check out the Atlanta-based band when they come to Buffalo for a show at Babeville’s 9th Ward on Thursday, June 21. Support comes from Tiger Chung Lee and DJ Pat K.
Sir Sly
[POP] Sir Sly makes seriously stellar “sly-fi” music, a brand of Arcade Fire-y indie pop music with plenty of psychedelic influence and dance potential. Check out the band’s latest music video for their song “High,” which is chock full of face melting dance choreography, and just plain fun, hook electro pop vibes.
Paris Monster
[INDIE] Wearing a blazer and t-shirt, sweat pouring down his forehead, a pair of red headphones wrapped around his pony-tailed hair, paris_monster’s Josh Dion simultaneously plays drums, keyboards, and sings, as his musical partner Geoff Kraly calmly lays down a low key bassline. It might be appropriate that the band’s name resembles a Reddit username more than a band name, as they’re the experimental type, dipping into soul, electronics, and indie rock, sometimes within the same track.
