9th Annual Edible Book Festival

[ART] Believe it or not but Edible Book Festivals are an international thing. If you live in Buffalo—which we’ll assume you do if you’re reading this—then you probably know that, because each year the Western New York Book Center puts on their own Edible Book Festival. Where the idea came from is related to April Fool’s Day—the events are usually held on or around that day. Different versions of edible books are created and displayed, then photographed and judged before finally being consumed.

Fourplay

[JAZZ] Fourplay is a popular contemporary jazz act that could be considered a supergroup. Many music fans in general might know who keyboardist Bob James is—if only for his song “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” which has been sampled by everyone from Eric B. & Rakim to Run-D.M.C., and Freddie Gibbs.

Huns, Flesh Trade and more

[NOISE] Sugar City is the place to be if you’re looking for some noise, industrial, or doom music this weekend. The line up for Friday March 31 includes stoner metal band HUNS, noise band Flesh Trade, post-doom band Debouch, industrial noise band STCLVR, and indie fuzz band Circular Logic.

Cap, real name John Caparulo is a stand up comedian known for his “everyman” style, as evidenced by his appearances on specials like The Next Generation of Blue Collar. John Caparulo comes to Helium Comedy Club for five shows this Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1.

Acid Dad with Honduras

[INDIE] A bunch of great psych rock and garage rock bands will set it up at the Waiting Room this Sunday, April 2. Three-piece Acid Dad out of New York City takes the headlining slot, joined by fellow New Yorkers Honduras who deliver hazy pop punk. Locals Ugly Sun and Deadwolf round out the line up.

Interview: Minus the Bear

[INDIE] It was time to rip it up and start again. Five years ago, touring their Infinity Overhead album, Minus the Bear nearly imploded. Between then and VOIDS, just out this month, the Seattle-based post-prog outfit fired some key support staffers and returned to Suicide Squeeze Records, the label of their more humble beginnings. Though they released a pair of retread discs in the interim (one acoustic and the other a rarities compilation), the long absence of new music had fans wondering about MTB’s future.

As If Dance Party: ‘90s/’00s Dance Party

[POP] There are certain aspects of the late 1990s and early 2000’s that we’re dying to relive, like Razor scooters and Dance Dance Revolution. If Euro Pop is on your list, then this is the party for you. As If Dance Party: ‘90s/’00s Dance Party / UK edition invites attendees to don their favorite Von Dutch hat and your best pair of M.U.D.D. jeans to rock out to Spice Girls, Ace of Base,  Kylie Minogue and more for a dance party straight out of 2001 at Mohawk Place on Saturday, April 1.

NES vs MS

[BENEFIT] Finally, an opportunity to put to good use those hours upon hours you spent playing Nintendo games as a kid (or if you’re like me, adult as well). NES vs MS is a benefit to raise money for the National MS Society. Players will donate for the chance to compete in head to head or two player games from a list of a few dozen games including Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Paperboy, Tetris, Tecmo Bowl, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Super Mario Bros (1,2, and 3), and many more.

Boss Hog

[PUNK] Blues and punk don’t always go together—they’re genres of different generations—but Boss Hog make it work. The wife and husband team, singer Cristina Martinze and guitarist Jon Spencer, formerly known as Pussy Galore, have been around in one form or another since the early 1990s.

Interview: Lucy Dacus

[INDIE] Lucy Dacus, a native of Richmond, Virginia, has emerged as one of music’s newest up-and-comers. The 21-year-old’s diverse collection of songs, which include hints of alternative, indie, folk, and even a little bit of country twang, are refreshing, mature, and cohesive.

Moon Bounce w/ Ehiorobo

[POP] Combining sweet synths and heavy percussion, artist/producer Moon Bounce will perform at Dreamland this Tuesday, April 4. Known as Philadelphia’s mutant pop pioneer, Corey Regensburg sits on the edge of disintegrated electronica with his sometimes abstract, groovy, soul stirring bounce tracks.

Collins Will Explain Trumpcare. How?

Representative Chris Collins is one of the biggest cheerleaders for Trumpcare, which will cost Americans more money for no guarantee of coverage for essential medical services, and throw 24 million people off their health insurance. Mr. Collins, a multi-millionaire, can afford whatever insurance he wants, or use the health insurance offered to him as a member of Congress. He also refuses to hold meetings or town halls with constituents who are concerned about losing their insurance, or not being able to afford it anymore.
