Eilen Jewel

[AMERICANA] Eilen Jewel has spent much of her professional career as part of the Western MA-based Signature Sounds stable, but she hails from Boise, Idaho, where she returned to reside in 2015.

Jojo

[POP] A native of Foxboro, Massachusetts, Jojo got noticed when she was 13 after years of performing in children’s singing competitions, hitting it big pretty much right off the bat: her debut single “Leave (Get Out)” topped Billboard’s Pop Songs chart and was certified gold, while the self-titled album that included the song went on to sell over four million copies.

CBW 5th Anniversary Extravaganza and Huge Fun Party Time. Yes!

[DRINK] It’s hard to believe that we’ve been swigging Community Beer Works beer for five years now. Do you know how many Amazing Larrys that is? A lot of Amazing Larrys. Quite a few Franks and Whales too. They’re celebrating all of those Larrys and Whales and Franks with a huge 5th anniversary party this Saturday, April 22 at their new location, 520 7th Street near Niagara Street.

Sebadoh

[INDIE] Dinosaur Jr.’s Lou Barlow needed an outlet for his songwriting that he wasn’t finding while creatively partnered with Jay Mascis, and so Sebadoh was born with a pair of cassette releases in 1987 and 1988. Shortly after the second tape came out, Barlow was ousted from Dinosaur Jr., which fueled his interest in pushing Sebadoh—a nonsense word—to the next level. Known for their fuzzy, lo-fi aesthetic, the trio began touring in 1991 and released new music regularly, but from 1999 to 2007, the project remained on hiatus.

Math The Band

I don’t know what Math the Band is. Nobody does, in fact, because how could you? This is a band whose most recent release is a song titled “Shark Attack II” and is a spastic synth punk cover of that song that blares from the ice cream truck down the street. The song, which is the one and only track on their album Now That’s What I Call Ragtime, is available to stream for free on Bandcamp, but it’s $100 if you want to buy a copy of the MP3. And, actually, to call them Math the Band is deceiving because Math the Band is no longer playing shows.

Amplify 3.0

[ELECTRONIC/DANCE] The Dnipro Ukrainian Center is rage central this Saturday, April 22 for a three floor electronic music event dubbed Amplify 3.0. The massive event features 38 DJs (?!) including headliners all culled from the Buffalo electronic music scene. Las Vegas by way of Buffalo trap masters SwaggleRock; Notixx, one half of the popular local duo Dusty Bits; and Eyes Everywhere. If you’re familiar with these guys, you’ll probably recognize much of the rest of the line up as well.

Runway 10

[FASHION] For the Buffalo State Fashion and Textile department, this edition of their annual fashion show, Runway, is a big one. It’s the 10th anniversary of the event and this year it will be held on campus, at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. It’s an opportunity for the department to reflect back on their last decade of work and look forward to their next: the theme is Remember/Imagine. “This is the largest show my students and I have ever produced. Game on! We are beyond excited,” says Erin Habes of Buffalo State’s Fashion department.
