[INDIE] The new album from Shilpa Ray, a series of tales about working and living in New York City as an artist, feels like a theatrical experience from the album artwork to the production of the songs. Raw punk energy combines with an almost Broadway-like show tunes production throughout, especially on songs like “Morning Terrors Nights of Dread” and “Rockaway Blues.” That’s complimented by new wave and more experimental pop sounds which are woven throughout. The album is her second on the Brooklyn based avant-garde record label Northern Spy Records. Previously, Shilpa released music under the name Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers, before dropping the Happy Hookers to release an album, 2013’s It’s All Self Fellatio, Shilpa Ray on Nick Cave’s Bad Seed record label. On Wednesday, November 1, Shilpa Ray returns to Nietzsche’s for a headlining show in support of her new record. She’ll be joined by garage rock bands Handsome Jack and the Gennies.
