Superhuman Happiness
[INDIE] With a ringleader like Stuart Bogie, it’s bound to be good. A Brooklynite by way of Chicago’s suburbs, Bogie’s a multi-instrumental powerhouse that you might have seen play with TV on the Radio if you caught them supporting Dear Science back in 2008. He’s also apparently done work for David Byrne, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Arcade Fire. Superhuman Happiness is a considerably more breezy project than any of those associations imply, however, and their new Escape Velocity is a hazy breath of fresh pop air, filled with blasts of late afternoon sun that get tempered with intermittent storm clouds. Co-ed vocals are situated amid mixed electro-organic rhythms that sound altogether modern, though they’re often fortified with just the slightest bit of disco sheen. Brass and strings enter unexpectedly, adding an idiosyncratic edge that makes tracks like the nearly seven minute opener, “VHS,” stand out as thoroughly original. The touring quartet arrives Friday, October 16 to play Nietzsche’s with Jack Topht (joined by Little Cake!).
