Railroad Earth
[ROCK] It may not take much talent to get played on commercial hit radio these days, but getting booked to play Telluride Bluegrass Festival on the sole basis of your demo tape is another matter entirely. And that’s exactly what happened to Railroad Earth back in 2001, essentially functioning as the roots-rocking sextet’s first proper gig after a short run of public rehearsals. Since then, led by key songwriter Todd Sheaffer, Railroad Earth has firmly planted itself in the canon of highly respected “newgrass” bands that overlap into the jam community, but they’re more about dexterity than mindless meandering. In an unsurprising (but highly productive) move, they backed Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes on his 2015 solo disc for Concord, Ashes and Dust. Ever expanding, the band’s 2014 album featured a 21-minute suite entitled “All That’s Dead May Live Again/Face with a Hole.” Railroad Earth brings their difficult to pigeonhole, musically prodigious chops to Town Ballroom on Sunday night.
