[BATTLE OF THE BANDS] There is a lot going on down at Canalside this summer. Like a lot: acoustic acts every Sunday, an open mic every Monday, the Tuesday movie series, and trivia night on Wednesdays, among many other activities. One activity that isn’t to be overlooked is the Battle of the Bands series, which will be held every Friday and sponsored by us, The Public. Each week four bands will compete for one of eight coveted (paid) opening spots for one of Canalside’s insanely popular free Thursday concerts—which include acts like En Vogue, Matt & Kim, Spoon, and Iron & Wine, among others. Bands will be judged by a panel of local professionals on quality of the performance, stage presence, and audience engagement. What makes this battle of the bands special is that each battle will be a battle between bands of a specific genre—for instance folk, jam bands or hip hop acts. Though the battles will typically be on Fridays, the series will kick off on Sunday, May 24 to coincide with Canalside’s Boardwalk Carnival the same day. The winner of the first battle—which will be Americana and roots music themed—will go on to open for the Sheepdogs and Yonder Mountain String Band on July 2. Bands: it’s not too late to sign up.
