May Day: Party for the Movements
[SKATE PARTY] If you’re sympathetic to any of the progressive, grassroots movements afoot in Buffalo in recent years, this is the party to bookmark this Sunday afternoon at the New Skateland Arena. The Crossroads Collective—a nascent coalition of likeminded organizations: PUSH Buffalo, Massachusetts Avenue Project, the WASH Project, Ujima Theatre Company, Public Accountability Initiative, Partnership for Public Good, Coalition for Economic Justice, and Open Buffalo—is throwing down for International Workers’ Day. Dubbed a party for “everybody and anybody,” admission will be free and skate rentals are only $1 (if you want to spring for a locker, that’ll cost you 50 cents), the idea is for everyone to get together and shake spring loose on the hardwood. There’ll be food from the West Side Bazaar inside, a food truck outside, young poets from the Just Buffalo Writing Center, dancers from Verve Studios, and skate-floor jams provided by DJs Sike and Jerome. The movement is social, racial, and economic justice, and the physical movement and culture of rollerskating falls right in line.
