Buffalo Humanities Festival: Gender Bender

[CONFERENCE]  A conference billed as a “festival of mind-bending ideas” has a lot of living up to do, but if this four-day festival—bringing together dozens of speakers, scholars, and artists from across the spectrum of the humanities—doesn’t edify you and make you a better person, you might just be a lost cause. Titled “Gender Bender,” the festival’s focus will remain on how society, literature, and art construct gender: From the use of black male bodies in comics to the rebellious women of country music, to the role of sex in sports, the festival’s broad reach offers something for every critical-thinking person. The festival’s headliner on Friday night is the author of the bestselling The Secret Life of Wonder Woman, Harvard historian Jill Lepore. (See our review of Lepore’s book here, and this week’s cover art by another festival presenter, artist Stacey Robinson.) The festival, which runs from Wednesday, September 23 through Saturday, September 26 will occur in four great venues across a compact space: Burchfield Penney Art Center, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo History Museum, and the Buffalo State College campus. Buying tickets early could mean a free lunch at West Side Bazaar: Check out out buffalohumanities.org.
