Note The Self

Choreographer Paul Matteson is returning to Buffalo for “Note The Self” to premiere an array of captivating performances, one of which will showcase seven local area dancers, including Melanie Aceto, Elyssa Bourke, Anne Burnidge, Nancy Hughes, Rachel Keane, Mary Grace Sullivan, and Kerry Ring. The BESSIE award-winning performer originally began working with the dancers at his week-long residency at UB Center for the Arts this past January. These dancers will be performing a piece called That time I pinned you down, which Matteson describes as a “dance thrown together with care,” which “explores sudden moments of harshness within close relationships.” Matteson’s solo and duet work will also be featured.

Additional choreographic works from Hughes will be presented throughout the evening as well. Her piece Why Be a Woman?, co-created with Sophia Roberts and Courtney Barrow, was inspired by collaboration with dancers from Nichols High School and the Buffalo Contact Jam. This work delves into “the importance of being an authentic woman in current times politically, emotionally, and physically.”

Jennifer Nugent, a former BESSIE award-winner will also join Matteson in a duet titled Note the Self. Matteson describes this duet as “an exquisite history of coming together and falling apart.”

This evening full of dance will take place on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30pm at the Flickinger Theater at Nichols High School. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at the door and online. “Note the Self” is co-sponsored by NYS DanceForce, Pick of the Crop Dance, U.B. Theatre and Dance Department, Center Dance and Buffalo Contact Improv Community.
