The Tragically Hip
[ROCK] The Tragically Hip sits in the pantheon of Canadian rock gods alongside Neil Young and Bryan Adams. The platinum selling, Juno Award-winning quintet is marked by their energetic showmanship and powerful roots-rock sensibilities. Their 12-album repertoire is an infectiously rhythmic treasure trove baring gems like “New Orleans is Sinking” and “Bobcaygeon.” By the mid-1980s they had become a household name in their Canadian homeland, but in 1993 they became a global concern. Their first multi-continental release, Fully Completely, introduced a melodious, mid-tempo R.E.M. flavor, veering from their raw rock origins but not loosing sight of it completely (“Looking For A Place To Happen”). Their rough, blues-infused rock sound took on a steadier tone, but retained a gritty, lyrical realism—“Locked In The Trunk Of A Car” is an ode to Pierre Laporte whose body was found in the trunk of his car. The album produced eternal staples in the Hip cannon like “50-Mission Cap,” “Courage (For Hugh MacLennan),” and “Wheat Kings.” The re-release of this seminal work in October 2014 prompted their Fully Completely Tour—hitting Buffalo on Saturday, April 18th at the First Niagara Center—where they will play the album in its entirety, along with other Hip favorites.
