Weird Al Yankovic

[FUN] Add prophet to Weird Al Yankovic’s long list of weird achievements. “Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess / So I’m gonna have to leave Yoda, I guess / But I know that I’ll be coming back some day / I’ll be playing this part ’till I’m old and gray. The long-term contract that I had to sign / Says I’ll be making these movies till the end of time / With my Yoda,” sang Yankovic back in 1980 about  Mark Hamill in his Star Wars role as Luke Skywalker. Here we are 38 years later, and of course Hamill, oldish and grayish, has returned to the role in last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Hamill even admitted that Yankovic’s song was on his mind while shooting the new Star Wars film. Weird. Of course, Yankovic has been deeply embedded in popular culture for a long time—since the late 1970s when at the age of 16, Yankovic recorded a parody of The Knack’s hit song, “My Sharona,”—mutated into “My Bologna”—which the Knack lead singer Doug Fieger loved so much he recommended Capitol Records release it as a single. At the age of 58, there’s no doubt that Weird Al is still a relevant pop culture satirist—earlier this month he released “The Hamilton Polka” a medley of farty polka renditions of songs from the hit play Hamilton. Catch Weird Al Yankovic at the UB Center For The Arts on Tuesday, March 13.
