Ben Caplan

[INDIE] Nothing really prepares you for Canadian oddball beardo Ben Caplan’s musical presentation, which is folk-based with elements of various traditional ilks, including Klezmer. It’s his voice that’s most arresting, though—an attention-grabbing gruff growl likened to a more tuneful Tom Waits. And Caplan’s got a gift for storytelling as well, shining a bright light onto humanity’s underbelly with equal parts resignation and dark humor. His latest, 2015’s Birds with Broken Wings, seamlessly blends that past and present, featuring over 30 guest musicians combining acoustic sounds from the all the world over. It was listed on CBC Radio’s 50 Best Canadian Albums of 2015, reached #1 on Earshot’s National Folk/Roots/Blues chart, and was accepted into the Baker & Taylor NPR Discover Songs library.  At Babeville’s 9th Ward on Friday, January 12, Caplan is joined by duo Harrow Fair, named after a 150+ year old annual agricultural festival in Ontario. Comprised of Canadian indie-folk vets Miranda Mullholland and Andrew Penner, that pair vacillates between the early-rock informed stomp and gritty balladry that comprises their debut, Call to Arms.
