PHOTOS: DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist

“That’s right, Buffalo: Nothing special, just records straight from Afrika Bambaataa’s personal collection,” said DJ Shadow, as he spun one of Afrika Bambaata’s 40,000 records. Shadow and Cut Chemist—known primarily as DJ for the late 1990s hip hop group Jurassic 5—stood in front of six turntables selecting records from hip hop’s past and turning them up for the crowd. The night not only featured some of the best turntablism in the world, but some crowd participation too, in the form of an improvisational breakdancing breakdown from some local b-boys and b-girls in the crowd.
