Looking Backward: Fillmore & Northland, circa 1952

by / Sep. 27, 2017 1am EST

Railway viaducts and subways are among the character defining features of the city. Here, looking south toward the intersection of Fillmore and Northland avenues, the charcoal-colored bridge of the New York Central passes overhead. On the left is Andrew Kausner’s food shoppe, with Henel’s ice cream and Sahlen’s cold cuts advertised prominently. Beyond the bridge is Frank Sandor’s bar and grille, with a neon Iroquois beer sign placed in an octagonal window. Such businesses would have been fueled by the nearby workforce at Houdaille Industries, makers of automobile and aviation products; Niagara Machine and Tool Works, makers of sheet metal working machinery; and Buflovak, makers of castings, pumps, and evaporators. The tavern and food shoppe no longer stand.
