Some local spots to visit during First Fridays in Allentown…

1   Spirits of Allentown / 257 Allen St.

The neighborhood’s long-time, late-night, go-to liquor store is in the last throes of a closeout sale. A buyer has the place under contract; the plan is some sort of sit-down cafe/restaurant.

 2  Antique Man / 234 Allen St.

An antiques and books collector once told me that he loved to observe how other collectors organized their houses and shops. Try to find themes in this most absorbing corner shop.

3  Pine Apple Company / 224 Allen St.

In the former GLOW Gallery spot, a half dozen well-known young artists and designers officially open their cooperative gallery this Friday, September 3, during the Allentown First Friday Gallery Walk.  Photo by Nicole Cooke.

4  Sweet Temptations du Jour / 220 Allen St.

Pastries and breads in the eastern European tradition. This sweet little bakery offers classes and gift certificates, too.

 5  Falley Allen / 204 Allen St.

It’s not open yet, but peek in the window at what used to be La Tee Da (and Cybele’s before that, and once upon a time the Cosmos Cafe) and have a look at what chef Chris Daigler is planning.

6  Charles Rohlfs House / 156 Park St.

Rohlfs was a celebrated furniture designer and maker in the American Arts and Craft movement. His house on Park Street is worth wandering off Allen Street for a visit. It’s privately occupied, so be polite.

 7  Pasión / 153 Elmwood Ave.

If you’re gallery walking on Friday, take advantage of the fine weather and expansive patio at Pasión, purveyors of Latin cuisine and lovely cocktails. The menu has just been re-designed. Check it out.
