Album: Finding the Old Text by Lady Lush and the Vinyls

Recommended if you like: Erykah Badu, AlunaGeorge, D’Angelo

Soul band Lady Lush and the Vinyls formed a few years ago in Fredonia. Their latest record, Finding the Old Text was released earlier this month and features five tracks of creatively produced funk and soul tracks. The album’s first track “Learn How To Live” combines electronic drums with percussive beat boxing to create a foundation for their impressive lead vocalist Sophia Howes to deliver her rich and soulful vocals—a formula followed on several of the album’s tracks. Other highlights include the loungey Adele-esque “Promises,” and the more bombastic “Prisoner.”

Single: “MPFlash” by CNP

Recommended if you like: Madlib, Nas, King Geedorah

From anew collaboration from Columbus Green a.k.a. Cee Gee and Program of rap group Prime Example comes the new single “MPFlash.” Green, credited on this track as MrGreen520, crafts a tight Madlib-inspired, snare heavy beat outlined by a hypnotic piano line. Program takes that base and lays over his Golden Age flow and straight forward lyrics to make for a grooving, chill track.
