Editor’s note: Each week Buffalo lifestyle brand Rise Collaborative scour Instagram for their favorite locally sourced images. “I’ve never really been able to decide between the city and the country. I love both equally. We’re in the process of planning / building our office in Buffalo so our farmhouse will act as a sort of respite. Matt and our son Gable are also very shy so a space outside of the hustle-bustle allows them to choose when to be social. Our favorite days are spent roaming and finding treasures the land has pushed back to the surface—skulls mostly, antique bottles, farm equipment. We’re fortunate to have lots of wooded property, but our neighbors also own around 70 acres of farmed fields and they welcome us to explore. Most weeks we’re (lucky and) overwhelmed with 12 Grain work, our apple orchard, vegetable garden and house remodel so it’s important to start off the weekend with meditative time as a family. This past Friday, what started out as a short walk to see the progress on the West Canal walking trail and parked excavator, became an all out hike through the dirt bike trails. A half-mile from home we stopped to rest in our neighbor’s field. Knowing he’ll be a wanderer, I often quiz Gable on landmarks, cardinal direction and routes so he’ll always find our house. I only had my camera out so I could follow up with photo reference. At four years old, without fail, he has an innate sense of home.”

“The photo was a collaborative effort with the girl in the photo (@lynnkostelny). The purpose was to take summery product photos for Urban Outfitters’ local Instagram account, @uoupstate. We took advantage of the beautiful weather and headed out early to really capture that summer feel. Personally, I really enjoy photography and love the whole process of creating shoots, editing, and generating inspiration within both the online community of Instagram and our actual city community of Buffalo. What I look for when taking photos—portraits specifically—is that moment of authenticity and genuineness. That moment where it doesn’t look staged or too posey, but when the subject is truly connected to it’s surrounding environment.”

“This old Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT) is located on Howard Street right off of Fillmore Avenue in an old scrapyard. On one side of it there is faded advertising for Highland Boat Sales. The LVT is visible right from the street. I simply walked in and snapped a few photos of it.”

“While I’m a Buffalonian through and and through, I love traveling and exploring new places (read: I have hardcore wanderlust). My friends and I went down to New Orleans for the Jazz Festival and decided to do a plantation tour while we were there. This shot was taken at the Oak Alley Plantation from the balcony looking towards the Mississippi River. The plantation is famous for the oak tree canopy lining the pathway to the house and the view is stunning. It was a great experience but it was hard to reconcile the beauty of the plantation and the horror of its past.”
